*~*~*~

Even in a Disneyland T-shirt and khaki shorts, Carlos Torres was intimidating. Arizona, having seen him toss Mark Sloan and George O'Malley around like rag dolls, braced herself for the worst when he walked out onto the balcony an hour later. She instinctively tucked her feet around the rungs of the chair and gripped the arm rests. If he planned on throwing her he would damn well have to work for it. Grateful for the shelter a hanging plant provided her with, she sunk down a few inches, hiding.

"Well, it's done." Carlos walked to the railing of the balcony and stared out over the sand dunes that stretched towards the ocean. "I spoke with Judge Sandoval and he's going to take care of everything. I read the report, Soph, and your daughter had every intention of driving herself home. The police found her lying spread eagle on the pavement trying to retrieve the keys from under the car. And you saw how she was dressed when she left the house. She's lucky she didn't also find herself charged with public indecency."

"Carlos, we have a guest."

Arizona watched with resignation as he turned around and finally noticed her presence.

"My goodness. Arizona." Carlos stared at her for several seconds. "You're here."

"I am," she replied. "It's nice to see you again, Mr. Torres."

"It seems we are doomed to meet under less than stellar circumstances," he told her, moving forward briskly.

Arizona automatically braced herself even more.

"Oh for heaven's sake!" Sophia snapped. "Look at her, Carlos! Her knuckles have turned white! What exactly did you do in Seattle to scare this poor child so badly? I should skin you alive!"

"What am I doing wrong now!?" Carlos growled. "I was merely going to hug the girl!"

"You are not allowed to hug her until she realizes that you don't have a gun on your person to do her in with," Sophia told him. "Now sit down and hush. Arizona was just about to finish telling me what transpired with the gunman. She was there, you know? In the room with Callie when it happened."

"When what happened?" Carlos demanded.

"I don't know yet. You interrupted us and you keep doing it. Men should be seen and not heard, Carlos. I've told you that repeatedly and you still refuse to obey." Sophia shook her head, then patted Arizona on the hand. "Ignore him and just cut to the chase, honey. Did this man harm either of you?"

Arizona kept watch on Carlos out of the corner of her eye. Just. In. Case. "No. I mean ... he showed up in the doorway covered in blood and told us he had been shot. We were prepping a little girl named Ruby for an emergency appendectomy. There were no operating rooms available to us so we were giving her an epidural to numb her for the procedure. He just -"

"You were going to operate on a child without an OR?" Carlos asked.

"Yes, sir. We eventually did." Arizona nodded her head. "Ruby was awake for the entire thing and Calliope had to sing to her to keep her calm. It was - terrifying. The singing and the situation. But ... before we operated ... Gary Clark, the gunman, told us he had been shot. I saw the gun and immediately covered Ruby so she wouldn't be hurt if bullets started flying.

"Calliope asked him his name and walked over to him with some bandages. She told him to put them against his wound and to get out. She told him to go. And he did. He did what she said and walked out. God, when I think of what could have happened." Shaken now, Arizona brushed away a tear that fell and exhaled. "This monster shot dozens of people and killed eleven of them. He could have easily killed her, too."

"Was she close with anyone who died?" Carlos asked.

"Her favorite scrub nurse died. And there was this resident named Charles Percy that she talked video games with. She was always stealing his Gameboy and finishing his games while he was in surgery." Arizona rubbed a hand over her face. "Our friends Alex, Owen, and Derek were shot. Derek seems to be the worst of them. He's our new Chief. Or ... was. I don't know if he'll pull through. I think he will, but his injuries are pretty severe."

"Why in the hell would she walk right up to the gunman like that? Does she have a death wish?" Sophia wondered aloud.

Papi, who had listened to the entire conversation from a nearby swing, cleared his throat. "Obviously she was determined to protect Arizona. That's the Torres in her coming out. She loves Arizona. What wouldn't she do for her?"

It clicked in Arizona's head then.

Callie had done what she did to convince Arizona that she was in love with her and not just the idea of love.

Because Arizona had basically dared her to do so.

"When are you going to forgive me for not being a good enough lesbian for you?"

"When you do something to convince me that you're falling in love with me and not with being in love. When you do something to convince me that I'm different from George O'Malley, Erica Hahn, Mark Sloan, or the girl at the coffee cart."

Callie had certainly convinced Arizona.

And could have died doing so.

*~*

Grateful for the air conditioning that Casa Torres was blasting, Arizona changed her clothing and freshened up. She opted to pull her long hair off her neck and secured it with a clip before glancing at the door that would lead her into Calliope's bedroom. She had been shown to an adjoining room that was connected to Calliope's by the largest bathroom Arizona had ever seen. Little splashes of Callie were everywhere in the bathroom and Arizona paused to smell the other woman's favorite perfume, readying herself. She let her fingers dance over a hair dryer and brush before she rested her palm against the doorknob and gently turned it.

Muted light was spilling around the drawn curtains, but Arizona could see her girlfriend perfectly. She was lying on her back, mini skirt around her thighs, knee boots firmly in place. One arm dangled over the edge of the bed and the other was tossed carelessly over her eyes. Arizona's brows raised when she saw the shirt Calliope was wearing ... what there was of it. Sure, they were in Florida, but shirts were supposed to be more than a few tattered strings that showed everything, including the black bra underneath.

Calliope Torres was wearing 'come fuck me' clothing and Arizona was livid.

Instead of searching for a light switch, Arizona opted to yank the curtains open. Resting her hands on her hips, Arizona surveyed the other woman in the light of the setting sun. It simply made matters worse, in her opinion. Both of Callie's knees were skinned and the elbow that Arizona could see was raw and caked with dried blood.

"What the hell did you do?" Arizona muttered under her breath. Louder, she said, "Calliope."

When the other woman made no move, Arizona moved forward and shook her roughly. "Wake up, Calliope!"

Callie jumped, clearly startled, and sat up fast.

Both women gasped at the same time.

Callie from utter shock at seeing Arizona in her childhood bedroom.

Arizona in utter shock at the black eye that Callie was sporting.

"What happened to you?"

"What are you doing here?!"

They both spoke at once and then silence hung between them like a veil.

Callie finally turned, clumsily planting her feet on the floor and fumbling with the lamp on the bedside table. She rubbed her eyes, hissed in pain, and attempted to focus on the blonde who was still standing before her. Her eyes were glassy and rimmed with day old mascara. "Are you -"

"Yes, Calliope, I am actually standing here and you have a little explaining to do."

Callie shook her head, nostrils flaring. "I don't think so."

"You just left! You walked out of the apartment and you *left*. I had to find out from Mark Sloan that you had come here. And he only told me because I did that distressed crying *girl* thing that drives him out of his mind."

"Arizona -"

"Why did you leave like that?"

"Clearly ... I had nothing to say."

"Clearly ... I do and I flew three thousand miles to say it."

Callie crossed her arms over her chest obviously ready to go toe to toe, but instead of anger a look of horror flashed across her face. "Oh my god. You - you're *here*. At my parent's house. You - you *met* my mother?"

"I did. She's my new best friend." Arizona lifted her chin defiantly. "And I'm pretty sure that your father likes me more than he likes you right now."

"Oh my god. You're here," Callie repeated. "You're *here*. I- I've never had anyone ... *here*."

"I'm not *anyone*. I'm not going to let you make me just *anyone*." Arizona took a deep breath and walked forward, stopping inches in front of the other woman. "What happened to your face?"

Callie took a deep breath when Arizona's fingers slid over her temple and cheek. Her brown eyes locked on blue ones. "Everything. Just ... everything."

"I'm so sorry for what happened in Seattle. I told you I slept with someone, but what I didn't tell you is that -"

The door opened and a bright light came on. Callie flinched and jerked away, shielding her eyes.

Arizona's hand dropped to her side and she forced herself to smile at Sophia. The older woman stalked into the room, took one look at the bruise on Callie's face, and began speaking in rapid fire Spanish.

The sheer volume of Sophia's rant had Arizona taking several steps back. She stared wide eyed as the mother and daughter gesticulated wildly and attempted to shout one another down. Never in her life had Arizona raised her voice at one of her parents and she alternated between awe and fear as she watched the argument unfold.

"You should be ashamed of yourself!" Sophia finally yelled in English. "How do you think this makes Arizona feel?! Seeing you like this! Knowing that you were arrested! She came all this way and just look at you!"

"Yeah, just look at me!" Callie spread her arms wide. "I'm a fucking mess. But I'm the mess that *you* people made."

"You listen to me -" Sophia began.

"No." Callie's voice was deadly calm now. "You're not saying a damn thing I want to hear. So leave me alone, Mother. You're great at that."

"What is that supposed to mean!?" Sophia demanded.

"Like you don't know," Callie snapped, walking past her mother and out of the room.

"I should go and -" Arizona gestured at the door.

"Go." Sophia nodded.

Arizona stayed long enough to watch the older woman sink onto Callie's bed and put her face in her hands before she hurried in the direction Callie had gone.

The sound of pills rattling around in a bottle alerted Arizona to Callie's whereabouts. She found the Latina in a different bedroom suite, one just as nice as her own, rifling through a medicine cabinet. Leaning against the doorway, she watched as Callie lifted a prescription bottle, studied the label, then wrenched the lid off.

"Callie, unless that's yours -"

"My head hurts."

"I have Tylenol in my purse. Just give me a second and -"

But Callie shook a couple of pills into her mouth and downed them, cupping her hands under the faucet for water.

"Calliope!" Arizona snatched the bottle from the counter and stared at the label herself. Oxycontin. A heavy dosage. "Are you out of your mind!?"

"It's fine, Arizona."

"It is not fine! These are your dad's and they're way too strong for you!" Feeling her temper flare to the point of screaming, Arizona grabbed the other woman by the arm and yanked her around to face her. "Look at me!"

"Calliope! Where are you!?" That was Carlos.

Arizona put the pill bottle back in the medicine cabinet and closed the mirrored door. She stood shoulder to shoulder with Callie and waited for the arrival of Mr. Torres. He appeared a moment later, glaring in at the two women. "What are you doing in here?" he demanded.

"I had to get away from Mom," Callie told him, pushing her hair behind her ears. "She's terrorizing me."

"Oh, mija, your face looks even worse today." Carlos gently lifted Callie's chin, then pressed a kiss against her head. "Perhaps drinking yourself into a stupor wasn't such a wonderful idea after all."

"The drinking was fine. It was the falling that did me in."

Callie looked at Arizona when she said it. The message was clear as bell. Falling in love with the Pediatric surgeon was the real mistake. Feeling her eyes flood with tears, Arizona stared at the tile floor beneath her feet.

"Do you need to go to the hospital, baby?" Carlos asked his daughter.

"I've got a built in hospital right here," Callie told him, tapping her finger against her head. "And I'm fine."

"You're not fine." Carlos sighed. "This isn't fine. What you did last night ... you're not seventeen anymore. And your mother and I are too old to go through that with you again."

"I'm sorry," Callie said. "I just - it won't happen again."

"That's all you have to say?"

"Pretty much."

"Well, you should wash up and dress for dinner. Do not come to the table in that ... that ... ensemble you have on. I mean it, Calliope."

"Okay."

"Arizona, I take it you find your room to your liking." Carlos said.

Arizona nodded. "Yes, sir. It's beautiful."

"She's staying in my room, Dad."

"Calliope-" Carlos's tone deepened.

"She's staying in my room or we can leave." Callie raised a brow, challenging her father.

Jaw tight, eyes narrowed, Carlos stood his ground.

Callie stood hers as well.

Arizona wanted the floor to open and swallow her whole.

"Fine," Carlos finally conceded. "I will have her things taken to your room. And you will both present yourselves for dinner where we will have a nice meal with no tension or aggravation. Your mother has looked forward to meeting Arizona for months and you will behave yourself. Am I clear?"

"Sure. Whatever."

"Thirty minutes." Carlos tapped his watch and left the room.

Arizona ran a hand over her face and sighed. "Why did you do that? I don't mind being in the other room."

"Why are you here, Arizona?"

"I love you. I'm here because I love you. And I meant what I said when I told you that I can't live without you and the kids and the house and the life I promised you."

"I'm not doing this right now."

"But -"

"But what?" Callie asked. "What do you want me to say to you?"

"I want you to listen to me." Arizona reached forward, closing the bathroom door. She lowered her voice and added, "The night of the party at Derek's house. That's when it happened."

"You slept with someone we work with?!"

"No!" Arizona leaned back against the door. "I went to that bar over on Tyler Street. The skanky one. The one we made fun of. And there was this girl. Callie, it was fifteen minutes in the back of her car. I barely kissed her. It was her hand up my skirt and my hand in her pants. I didn't go down on her, she didn't go down on me, and I didn't get off. I didn't even talk to her when it was over. I just got in my car and drove home. I'm sorry. It was just -"

"Sex. I know. I've been there and done that."

"You - you slept with someone else?"

"No! And that's the whole point. I'm not pissed at you because you fucked someone else. I don't care if it was fifteen minutes or fifteen days. I know about sex like that. I've done it. I did it to get over George and I did it because I was confused about Erica. I've even done it for the hell of it. I can't judge you for that when I've done it. I'm pissed at you because you were *fine* without me."

"I wasn't -"

"You were! The night of Derek's party? You were perfectly content. You were laughing with your friends and ignoring me. At work ... you smiled all day and laughed so loud with Teddy at lunch that I could hear you from the hallway. And me? I spent every waking moment trying not to go crazy, trying not to cry and I couldn't do it. Before surgery, after surgery ... I cried every single time I thought about you which was all the time." Callie rubbed her eyes as if willing herself not to cry now. "I went home the night of Derek's party, got drunk, and cried myself to sleep on the bathroom floor."

"Callie, you breaking up with me was the single worst moment of my life! Of course I -"

"I DID NOT BREAK UP WITH YOU! YOU BROKE UP WITH ME!"

"I did not!"

"Yes, you did, Arizona! I asked you what we were going to do and you said you were going to get your things and go! You said we'd see each other at work! That's breaking up! You left me!"

"You made it very clear that it was over."

"And you made it very clear that you didn't love me enough to stay and work it out. I don't understand what's so bad about me. What makes me so unlovable? What makes me so easy to leave?"

"You're not -"

"I am! George did it. Erica did it. My family did it. And then you ... you did it, too. Just because I wanted a future with you that was bigger than what you wanted for yourself. I wanted *kids* with you, Arizona. *Kids*. That's a lifetime commitment and yet you still had the nerve to tell me you don't trust *me*. I'm the one who wanted forever. You're the one who walked away from that."

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Arizona's tears fell freely now. "But I came here for you. I came here to fix this. I love you. I love you more than I've ever loved anything in my life and I need you. I'm sorry about everything. If I could take it all back I would. You have to know that I would."

"That's beautiful. Poetic, even." Callie glared at her. "Look, my parents don't know we broke up and I really don't want to have to explain ANOTHER failure in my love life ... so you can stay. And you can pretend to be in love with me for their benefit because I sure as HELL don't buy it."

"Cal-"

"I'm going to take a shower."

"Wait!" Arizona reached for her again and this time, caught her. "I kissed you in the elevator *after* Derek's party. Ask me why."

"Arizona, I don't -"

"Ask me why!"

"Fine. Why?"

"Because I wanted you to be the last person I ever kissed. Not that other girl. You. Just ... please give me a chance."

"We're going to be late for dinner. I need to get ready. And you need to prepare yourself for the crazy that is dinnertime in this house."

"Oh, I'm prepared. You should probably prepare yourself, too, Calliope. Because we're not over. Not by a long shot."

This new chapter comes at a perfect time because I'm not all that pleased how they handled Jessica's maternity leave by having Arizona dump Callie at the airport like that. Even though the circumstances are different, it looks like you're going to have her work really hard to get Callie back. Can't wait to read more...

This was really, really amazing. I loved their argument. It was very real and brought up just about every question I, myself, have ever asked concerning their breakup. I like that Callie isn't just taking Arizona at face value. Again, that's very true and honest. The way you're building this up is great. I can't wait to see how things unfold.

I'm OVERJOYED to be reading your work again. I love the way you write Callie so I will read anything you write (even if I'm partial to Callica and have read OHTM 6 times). I cannot wait to see what you are going to do with Callie's parents, especially the development of her relationship with her mom. I think that relationship has the potential to provide so much insight into Callie.

Great chapter although I hate angst and after last night god knows why I'm reading this lol! But you said to me months ago that this would end up being happy and with promises of happiness and sexy times I'm so in lol! Plus I love Arizona's determination! Telling Callie it's not over - It's kinda hot of Arizona being all confident and bossy and lets face it who could re-sist her!

You are easing the pain in my heart left by both 7x07 and losing my rugby game of which I only got to play 10mins. Basically you should be sainted. Ok, so back to the story.

Arizona seems pretty spot on in terms of her fierce love of Callie. Everything about her is in character and amazing. Especially her fear of Carlos. You're giving us more of her than the show ever has and the same goes for Callie.

Every time you write Callie I feel like we see the real her. The show's Callie is nowhere near this whole and deep, especially considering you bring in her family and show us who she is. I can totally see the rash, impulsive, and self-destructive person that she has the capability to be and I can see Arizona fighting with every inch to keep Callie.

I hope to see more of this story soon. Something needs to ease the ache of my heart that JCap's pregnancy has brought upon our lovely ladies.

I like this a lot. I like that you've stepped outside the bounds of normal and gone to the Torres family mansion. Lovely. I want to visit... BUT, aside from that.

This is a very real, real, real lesbian thing to talk about. The whole "I didn't go down on her, didn't get off" thing is perfect. And so something I think would be important to learn.

I'm sad Arizona did that, but we all make mistakes. And, see, they're not over. Not by a long shot.

You're very talented. I hope you'll continue updating. Lovely little story you've got going here.

Also, I want to see Carlos Torres in a Disneyland shirt.

AMAZING! I didn't see Callie's reaction coming at all but it makes sense after hearing her state her case. It breaks my heart for Arizona because obviously she DOES love her. But I kind of get it, ya know? It's time to prove it.

Because as much as I believe that Arizona loves Callie, I think that Callie loves Arizona more. I think Callie sees Arizona as her partner in everything and as her future, whereas Arizona sees Callie as someone she shares her life with but ultimately puts herself first.

I don't really know which way of loving is better, but I get why Callie needs Arizona to step up here. And on the show too. Especially after last week. I'm so excited and nervous to see how they fix Callie's heart this time... </3 Great job! I'm excited to see how you fix it too :)
